Comprehensive Examination

The comprehensive exam serves as a capstone experience in the HRD program. It is designed to provide students with the opportunity to integrate and to use the knowledge they’ve gained through their course work in the program.

Students have the following exam options to fullfill the comprehensive examination requirement:

  1. Written Comprehensive Exam (Campus Students Only)
  2. Professional Certification Exam
    1. PHR, SPHR, or GPHR
    2. Assurance of Learning Assessment

     

Choosing the Right Examination Level

An honest assessment of your skills, knowledge and responsibilities within the HR function is critical when deciding whether to seek certification at the PHR or SPHR level. The following profiles of typical PHR and SPHR candidates may help in assessing which examination is appropriate for you. It is important that students discuss options with their advisor for the exam that is most appropriate based on their professional and academic experience.

 

  • Villanova Written Comprehensive Exam (Campus Students Only)
    • Administered each semester with dates determined by the Graduate Academic Calendar.
    • Each exam is four hours long, closed-book, and requires students to answer a total of six essay questions.
    • Students must demonstrate an understanding of specific theories, concepts, practices, and scholars, apply theories, concepts, and practices to specific examples, and critically think about the evaluation of those ideas. 

     

  • Professional in Human Resource Management (PHR)
    • “The PHR exam focuses on the technical and operational aspects of human resource practices, U.S, law and regulation based” – HRCI, PHR Description
    • It is a three hour exam with 175 multiple choice questions and content information can be found in the PHR/SPHR Body of Knowledge

     

  • Senior Professional in Human Resource Management (SPHR)

     

  • Global Professional in Human Resource Management (GPHR)
    • Designed for the HR professional who has HR responsibilities that cross national borders, who understands the strategies of globalization, etc.
    • It is a three hour exam with 165 multiple choice questions and content information can be found in the GPHR Body of Knowledge.
