Q: What aspect of the Villanova HRD Program did you find to be most beneficial?

A: First and foremost, I value the network created by the Villanova HRD family.  The relationships that Dr. Bush and Dr. Andrulis have nurtured since the inception of the program have directly created employment opportunities, friendships and resources for me.

Q: What advice do you have for current HRD students?

A: Learn from your classmates.  It has been 10 years since I finished the program and I still reflect daily on stories, case studies and other experiences that my classmates shared of their own workplace experiences.

BG Schwartz has received a number of awards including the Bronze Star Medal, the Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal and the French National Defense Medal in Gold.

Q: What aspect of the Villanova HRD Program did you find to be most beneficial?

A: I thought that the program was incredibly well-connected with the regional HR community, which benefited the students in several ways. For example, in almost all of our courses, the instructors brought in very good guest speakers who not only shared their expertise, but were very open to networking with students. Of course, Dr. Bush is still the master networker, and he is always making connections for students and alumni.

Q: Were there any experiences while you were enrolled in Villanova HRD program that you believe really helped jump-start or advance your HR career?

A: The internship. I had a great internship at Rohm and Haas, and even though my first job out of school was with a software company, I maintained the connections that I had made at Rohm and Haas. Later when they were trying to fill a position, they contacted me because they knew me from that experience.

Jennifer Carta

Jennifer Carta - Compensation Analyst

Jennifer Carta is a Compensation Analyst at VWR International LLC.  Having joined VWR upon graduation back in 2010, she has had the opportunity to serve in a various roles over the past few years including HR Project Assistant, HR Rep for the Leadership Development Program, and her current position.  Jennifer received her M.S. in Human Resource Development from Villanova in December of 2012 after receiving a B.A. in Business Administration with a concentration in Management & Leadership and a minor in Spanish from the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 2010.  Jennifer is currently a SHRM member, a sister of the Delta Zeta sorority, as well as a member of The Junior League of Philadelphia serving as Chair-Elect for the Education & Volunteer Training committee.  Jennifer currently resides in Manayunk, PA.

Q:        Was there any one course that stood out for you?

A:        The compensation class taught by Diane Lirio had a great impact on me.  This class sparked a curiosity and interest to learn more about compensation.  My work gave me exposure to compensation through a rotation, and that ultimately led me to decide to stay in compensation at the conclusion of my rotation program.  I found the course content to serve as a good foundation and baseline going into my role.  Even to this day, in my current role I still use one of the textbooks from this class, The Compensation Handbook.

Q:        What advice do you have for current HRD students?

A:        I highly recommend taking the time to talk to and get to know your fellow classmates.  I have met classmates that have interesting and amazing work experiences and background. Having only worked for one company since graduating undergrad, I found it beneficial in speaking with classmates to learn from them what it is like to work in HR in different capacities.  I have been able to hear what it is like to work for companies outside a privately held biotech distribution company, and it is helpful when deciding what kind of company or even industry you want to work for.  The same can be said for learning who/what industry you may not want to work for.
