Academic Programs

Earning a Master's degree, pre- or a post-master's or certificate in biology from Villanova is an enriching experience, whether you plan to use your degree as a stepping stone to further graduate or professional study, a launching pad to a career in the biological sciences or as a way to enhance your existing career with new skill sets.

All of our students and alumni can utilize the support of our award-winning Career Services office. You can find further information on careers in Biology, (click here).

These are challenging programs that offers opportunities for study and research at all levels of biological complexity from laboratory-based molecular investigations to field-based studies of organisms and their environments, both in the United States and abroad. Regardless of your focus, the program will enhance your quantitative, analytical, and written and oral communication skills.

Two master's degrees are available:
a Master of Science (30 credits with thesis)
and a Master of Arts (33 credits culminating in a comprehensive exam).

If you want to develop a specific skill set, you can choose from several Certificate Programs:
The Certificate of Graduate Study
(16 credit hours including at least three lab courses)
The Advanced Certificate of Graduate Study in Biology
(24 credit hours, including at least four lab courses)

In addition, pre- and post-master's certificate programs are available in  Cell, Molecular and Development Biology, and Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology.

As a graduate student here, you will work in our recently remodeled and expanded research facility, fully outfitted with electron microscopes, DNA sequencers, and computing and visualization resources. Your class sizes will be small and you will be working directly with distinguished faculty members.

If you would like to speak or meet with the Program Director, another faculty member or current graduate student, please contact the Biology Department.
