CLAS Student on Road to Doctoral Degree in Dental Medicine

William Manolarakis

William Manolarakis ’18 (Biology) knows that Villanova’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is a place where passion meets opportunity. With extensive exposure to healthcare—while volunteering at a hospital and shadowing his father’s dentistry practice—William came to college with his sights set on a doctoral degree in dental medicine. Villanova would help him get there.

Thanks to Villanova’s Dental Affiliate program with University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, William is on track to earn his Bachelors and Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees in seven-years—a feat that typically takes eight.

The Dental Affiliate Program is one of five affiliate programs offered though the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Health Professions Advising Office. Working with students interested in the health profession, the office’s mission is to help every student find their fit and support them with the resources they need every step of the way—from exploring career options to executing post-graduation goals.

“The combination of the strong liberal-arts foundation at Villanova with the excellent dental education, low class size and pristine facilities of Penn Dental Medicine made my decision to participate in the program an effortless one,” William says.

William found Villanova’s Humanities curriculum particularly valuable in preparing him for his professional career—so valuable that he decided to minor in it.

“The quality of instruction and engagement with the course material served as the primary motivation behind my decision to pursue a Humanities minor,” he says. “As a dental professional, I will seek to employ a holistic approach that treats my patients with due respect and dignity. This approach directly draws upon the education that I have received in my Humanities courses at Villanova.”
