2010 Governor's Jefferson Award recipient: Randy Foye
Randy Foye is a 2010 New Jersey State Governor's Jefferson Awards recipient. He was nominated by Joyce McCree, who wrote the following essay describing his service background.
Randy Foye was a student at Dr. E. Alma Flagg Elementary School in Newark, New Jersey. Having lost both his parents by age six, Randy has seen firsthand the difficulties kids can have growing up in a tough urban environment.
Despite growing up in these conditions, Foye still graduated from Villanova University in four years and is currently playing in the NBA for the LA Clippers.
In 2008, in his second year as a professional basketball player, he established the Randy Foye Foundation (RFF) and the Assist 4 Life program. The RFF has given the students of Dr. E. Alma Flagg School backpacks, school supplies, coats, toys and food at Thanksgiving.
Randy is a positive role model and he provides a nurturing environment that can make a difference in a young person’s life. He is committed to showing the community that you have to have hope and that you can make a difference in this world.
Every year, Randy Foye selects seven students and makes them a part of his life and success. The selected students get to go with him to his fundraising efforts, his games and his home. Beforehand, they are taken on a big, family-style shopping excursion to Short Hills Mall where the students are treated to a complete party wardrobe for the event.
The group is mentored personally through e-mail by Randy and through weekly visits from Christina Vuocolo, Vice President of the Randy Foye Foundation. Randy comes to the school, talks to the students and goes into every class. After returning from a trip oversees, he spoke to the kids about the advantages to living in the U.S. and reminded them how thankful they should be for the opportunity to get an education.
Randy is always thinking of more ideas to get students on the right track. He is planning to reward the class with the highest average a trip at the end of year, with himself as the tour guide.
Beyond that program, Randy supports Team Foyeboy, which gives underprivileged youth programs on-court supplies.
Randy Foye is dedicated to giving back to the community where he was raised – Newark, New Jersey. The RFF raises funds, develops programs and aims projects directly at improving the lives of the people – especially the kids of Newark.
Working hand in hand with corporations and the people of Newark, the RFF serves as an example of what a grassroots movement can accomplish through special events if everyone is focused on working hard and giving back.
